SAN DIEGO (Border Report) -- After a successful trial run in November, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has decided to implement 24-hour operations for both the SENTRI Trusted Traveler Program vehicle lanes and pedestrian processing lanes at the Calexico West Port of Entry.

The new hours start April 1.

Those enrolled in the program can cross the border using the SENTRI lanes 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Our goal is to serve growing bi-national communities throughout the Imperial Valley. I am confident that the permanent implementation of 24-hour SENTRI operations will aid us in achieving that goal," said Roque Caza, Area Port of Calexico Port Director.

Caza said members of the traveling public can monitor vehicle wait times via CBP’s CBP's Border Wait Times website or download the Border Wait Times mobile app on their phones.

He says wait times are updated on an hourly basis.

An estimated 453,000 commercial vehicles and 2.2 million passenger vehicles travel across the Calexico Port of Entry every year.

It connects Baja California's capital city of Mexicali with Calexico on the U.S. side of the border.

Last year, the General Services Administration completed a $400 million renovation project at this border crossing.
